Influential Courses
Management of the Aquatic Environment
I had the opportunity to conduct research in a local, public lake measuring mercury levels. Our findings were then provided to stakeholders in an accessible infographic.
Skills: aquatic sediment coring, macroinvertebrate identification, research methods
History of the Environment
This course added the historical components that had been missing from my understanding of the human relationship with nature. We discussed matters of policy, racism and economics globally and learned to be critical when handed information.
Conservation Biology
This class emphasized the importance of and difficulties surrounding important habitat and specie conservation. We debated difficult topics surrounding ex situ and in situ conservation, species reintroduction and elimination, and the extent to which humans can fix what we have begun.
Marine Biology
While abroad in New Zealand I had the opportunity to conduct research featuring Cockles and the affects of light and darkness on sub-surface activities. We also took sand samples in which we identified all of the organisms under a microscope.
Agroecology
This course exposed me to the intersectionality between ecology and agronomy. I had the opportunity to conduct an experiment analyzing nematode abundance and effectivity at the Dickinson College Farm.
Skills: lab skills, sediment coring, research methods
Arctic Studies
Through this course I had the opportunity to work through different forms of science communication, most notably a children's book which I hope to publish in the future. I also had the opportunity to be a research assistant in Iceland upon the completion of this course.
Skills: Aerial drone photography, sample collecting
